The Wide-Eyed World of Blythe

Re-popularized by photographer Gina Garan, Blythe is the eye-color changing doll of the 1970's. The Blythe doll is based on the art work of Margaret Keane.

Today fans of Blythe customize her clothes, hair and make-up for fun. Hobbyists also take pictures of their Blythes in a variety of settings, showcasing their sewing and customization skills. Blythe is stylish, smart and sophisticated, reflecting the dreams of her owners.

I have found this great Blythe Tutorial site. so You can start to style your Blythe!

how to cutting Blythe's hair bang?

1. blythe bangs First you have to section off the hair that will become the bangs. Sort out a triangular area, going about 1/2″ back from the hairline in the middle, and tapering to two points (on mine I used an imaginary line along the outside of her eyes).

2. blythe bangsBundle the section in a rubber band well below her face. Tease them so they are solid and even across her forehead. (If you pull them straight down, you will have a lump in the middle because the part is thick. Spread the hair from the part out to avoid the bulge!) I used a headband to hold them in place, a scrunchie would work too. Just use something cotton so it won’t be hurt by the iron! Also make sure that the rest of her hair is smooth and the part is perfect. Any hairs out of place will stay that way after step 3!

3. blythe bangsHeat up your iron to a high cotton setting. Mine goes from 1-7, I used #6 setting. Steam is not necessary, but won’t hurt.

Here’s the important part - put a WET towel completely over her head, covering all exposed hair. Press around her hairline area and across her forehead with the hot iron - it will make a sizzling sound and there should be lots of steam from the hot towel. Keep it moving around for at least 30 seconds. If you hear it stop sizzling, the towel is too dry - dampen it again. Look under the towel often and comb through any bangs that look out of place

4. blythe bangsTake off the towel and headband, but not the rubber band - make sure there are no gaps in the fringe! If it looks good, you can unplug your iron. If not, tease them as needed and repeat step 3.

5. blythe bangs While the hair is a little damp from the steam, cut to the desired length with sharp scissors. Take small snips at a time and use a fine-toothed comb to control it. Cut it a little longer than you want the final product - they will shorten up about 1/8″ as they dry out.

You can always take more off once they dry and settle into their natural position.

Feathered Bangs

blythe bangsFor feathered bangs, follow steps 1-3 above, but cut the hair MUCH LONGER than you want the final bangs (about an extra half inch, or in the center of the eye-hole). Holding your scissors vertically (parallel to the strands of hair) begin taking small, quick snips off of the tips of the hair until you have achieved the desired length and shagginess. feathered bangs look great on B-hair with a slight curl (just about all of them except LM, AB, and Piccadilly have “curly” hair).

History of Blythe

hi everyone! now it is time to share with you the Blythe history, so you will know how this popular doll was born! want to know more about Blythe? please keep reading it!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLYTHE AND HER REINCARNATION

Kenner girls

Manufactured by Kenner in 1972, the original Blythe was designed by Marvin Glass & Associates, one of the world's foremost toy design studios. When the Toy Industry Hall of Fame was established in 1984, Marvin Glass was in the first group inducted (which coincidently also included Merrrill L. Hassenfeld of Hasbro, Inc.), ten years after his death. Kenner was bought out by Tonka Toys, which in turn was bought out by Hasbro in the mid-1980s. And that is how Hasbro has come to own the Blythe property.

Then and now.

In 1972, children found the large eyes that changed from green to pink to blue to orange with the pull of the drawstring at the back of Blythe's head a bit on the scary side. Blythe was produced for only one year, but it is now apparent that she was ahead of her time. For many years, Blythe was a curiosity that only doll collectors were interested in. Then in 1997, a friend introduced Gina Garan to Blythe, thinking that Gina looked like the doll. Gina had just been given an old camera and she needed to test it. Her first photos using that camera were of Blythe. Gina, who works as a video and TV producer, started carrying at least one of her Blythes wherever she went on her travels around the world and took many photos.

In December 1999, at the opening of an exhibition for the CWC International artists in Soho, New York, Gina showed her photos to Junko Wong. Junko took these photos to Parco and made a presentation for an exhibition and as a "virtual model" for Parco's innovative sales promotions. In the summer of 2000, This is Blythe, photos by Gina Garan, was published by Chronicle Books. The Christmas 2000 Parco campaign featured Blythe in a TV commercial and print media and Blythe took off in Japan. On eBay, vintage Blythes jumped in price from $35 to $350. Blythe continued as Parco's "image girl" through the spring and into the summer of 2001. The price for vintage Blythes jumped to thousands of dollars U.S. on eBay. Even the Neo-Blythes are sold for up to four times their retail price on the Yahoo auction site in Japan.

In June 2001, the first of the Neo-Blythes - produced by CWC and manufactured by Takara - went on the market. The launch of the neo-Blythes was in conjunction with a photo exhibition by Gina Garan. Gina made the trip from New York for the launch and exhibition.

Vintage Blythe advertisement

The Parco Limited Edition (1000 dolls), sold out in less than an hour, was followed by the Mondrian, and then Rosie Red, Holly Wood, All Gold In One, Kozy Kape Inspired, Aztec Arrival Inspired, Sunday Best, and in conjunction with the first year anniversary of the neo-Blythes in Japan, Miss Anniversary Blythe. The first year anniversary was marked by a series of Blythe events in Tokyo, which included an exhibition and charity fashion show at the Spiral Hall in Aoyama and exhibitions at the Rocket and CWC Galleries, and at IMS in Fukuoka, Kyushu. The exhibition featured photos by Gina Garan and dolls styled by artists, fashion designers, and Blythe fans. The fashion show featured couture for Blythe by such internationally known designers as: Issey Miyake, Chisato Tsumori, and Hysteric Glamour.

Sleeping Blythe

I have come across found these cute Blythe advertisement images online.
The sleeping Blythes are so cute and peaceful!
Not quite sure what product it is selling, beccause I can't read much Japanese... :(
But in my guess, it might be" sleeping pill"...??? am I right?

Blythe exhibition

Gina's friend has opened a new gallery and have chosen Gina and Blythe for their first exhibit:

Location: IXTEE GALLERY, 2/F 106, Johnston Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong
Dates: December 20, 2008 - January 20, 2009

Should be fun!

Here's something cool. Gina got a call from the folks at Henri Bendel the other day to let her know that they've just released a brand new version of the Bendel Girls Christina Gordon and she designed for them last year. They're so cute!!

If you want a set for yourself, please visit Henri Bendel on-line.
I have found this post at THIS IS BLYTHE.com , and I would like to share with you guys.
Thank you Gina for taking such nice Blythe photos!

Just a few weeks ago I announced the winners of my 'heroes' contest and the number 1 slot went to gea* who did this hysterical mini-me version of Bob Dylan:

The other winners included:

'Hanoi Jane' by Terri Annie Liebovitz by Supervelma

Amelia Earhart by Leloo Charlie Chaplin by EffieDal

CONGRATS to everyone!! The contest was a blast. I was sad to see it end and am now drilling up ideas for the next one. Suggestions anyone?

The cat is out of the bag!

UPDATE!!:

The cat is out of the bag! The secret project we've been working on is the Alexander McQueen/Target collaboration! A few images have been leaked already:

*photo from Wendy at www.nitrolicious.com/blog

and here is the ad in action, right in my neighborhood!:

The whole campaign rolls out on March 4th, however there's a sneak peek on Target's website. Check it out! This was definitely one of the coolest things I've done with Blythe. I'll be uploading behind-the-scenes photos of the shoot in a few weeks. And....don't faint...but there's also a live action commercial that will be debuting in March. As soon as I get my mitts on it I'll add it as well.

2009!! Here we go!

2009!! Here we go!

Hey everyone,

Happy New Year!! Hope you're all having a fantastic '09 so far!!

I thought I'd start off the new year with a competition that will put smiles on so many faces. It's called the Manna Energy Dress Drive. If you'd like to participate simply send me an e-mail at gina@thisisblythe.com with 'Dress Drive' in the subject line or visit this contest link on the forum. There are two ways to take part. Option A: For a $10 fee you'll get one of these sweet plain white dresses:

Your mission will be to design/decorate it and send it back to me. You will then receive a dress chosen at random from another TIB member. Option B: You may request up to 5 dresses without paying a fee. Your job is to design/decorate them and send them back to me. They'll be auctioned off at a later date. Now here's the best part: All proceeds will be going to charity. Based on the title of the competition you can probably guess that I've chosen Manna Energy (www.mannaenergy.org), an organization focused on providing clean water to over 250,000 kids in Rwanda (3% of the entire population of the country). Manna Energy was started by my cousin Ronnie, who some of you may remember from my constant bragging last summer. Ronnie is an astronaut who went up in the Space Shuttle in June and did two spacewalks. Where he finds the free time in which to found charitable organizations I'll never know. He's an incredible guy. I'd love to make a nice big donation from TIB, so PLEASE participate in this if you can. It really is a worthwhile cause AND it could get your girl a new frock!!

After years of chatting on-line, I *finally* got to meet Megan/Minklet/Lapushka here in NYC. For those of you who don't know her, she's my TIB moderator extraordinaire as well as the most incredible artist and customizer. She came to town to help me on a super secret Blythe project that will be unveiled in the next few months. Though I can't spill the beans just yet, I can give you a sneak peak of us at work:

You can't tell from the photo but it was about 10 degrees out. That's me crouched on the floor and Megan up above. It really was a blast.

See you there! xxx
Name: Blythe

Manufactured by Kenner in 1972, the original Blythe (now known as "vintage") was produced for only one year and then was retired because of poor sales.
For 28 years, Blythe was a curiosity that only doll collectors were interested in.
Then, in late 2000, she made her comeback in Japan when CWC produced a charming TV commercial for Parco department store starring Blythe. After the TV spotlight she became an overnight sensation in Japan and Asia. In June 2001, to meet the popular demand of this new Blythe fanbase, CWC produced an 11 inch neo-Blythe doll, Parco Limited Edition, with the permission of Hasbro and the manufacturing help of Takara. Since that launch, 82 and still counting! editions of neo-Blythe dolls have been produced.

Welcome message!

hi everyone! it is very nice meeting you here, which means we have common interest...."BLYTHE".
You know the world is so huge, it is not easy to have the chance to meet with someone who has same interest as you! But here we go, we are meeting here and share things which make us laugh and happy!

I think Blythe is not the most pretty Doll in the world, but she has her own character and identity, and that is very important to me. I remember when I was in Tokyo, I was hoping I am the Blythe Shop owner, If I can ever own a Blythe Shop that will be very nice and happy!

When I passed the shops do sell Blythe Dolls, I wish I can buy them home!

The reality is, Blythe is not cheap! and I can't buy them all, and I can't travel to all the Blythe shop around the world! so I create this group and hope we can share Blythe with others around the world! and it will be so nice to see and know what did you get for your own Blythe collection!

Lets share!

Kenner's Blythe Doll Takes on New Life in Japan

Girls of a certain age may remember playing with Blythe, a big-headed doll introduced by American toy company Kenner in 1972. A generation later, Blythe has taken on a new life in far-off Japan. Blythe's most devoted Japanese fans hold her in such deep esteem, one might liken it to mania!

Got an original Kenner Blythe stashed away in your attic or basement? Well, you may be shocked to know how valuable she is today to legions of Japanese fans.

An original in excellent condition can sell for thousands of dollars, and there is a thriving online marketplace for Blythe parts, clothes, even mohair used by fans to make Blythe wigs! How do I know this? My wife has two Takara (Japanese) Blythes and a small “Petit Blythe” in Gothic Lolita regalia who rests on a small inflatable sofa in our living room cabinet. Sweet!

The fifth part of the winners' interview of the 3rd annual Blythe Beauty Contest 2008.
They tell us about their doll concept and the style.
The entries for the 4th annual Blythe Beauty Contest will start from March 2009.

I reallu like this one: Mrs. Retro Mama!!

"Mrs. Retro Mama" is the cutest homemaker on the block! Inspired by the vintage Japanese "Showa" Era, her design and fashion reflects that time period.

She wears a bright red one-piece with pleats with a retro print apron while she works around the house. She is fashionable everyday, whatever she may be doing! After finishing her housework, she wears a chic peacock blue hounds tooth coat to go shopping with her friend! Her funky printed handbag and white boots are so "Showa" era! Her yellow hair color is pop and cute to remind you of the fun and fashionable 1970's of Japan!

The most interesting detail for this special Blythe is her skin tone! Her skin is made to look like the vintage Blythe dolls from the 1970's!

To enrich the experience of the showa world we will be including a showa styled kitchen background. It includes many kitchen items! Her face mold is "Radiance". Her lip shape is the same as "Darling Diva".

She has all special eye colors too! Warm pink, Sepia, Turquoise, and Light Green!

Price: 16,590yen (tax included)
Limited to 3000dolls

Final design for CWC Limited Edition Neo Blythe "Bloomy Bloomsbury"!

Feb.19.2009

Final design for CWC Limited Edition Neo Blythe "Bloomy Bloomsbury"!

Thank you for waiting!
We finally present the final design for the collaboration Neo Blythe with the fashion brand "Jane Marple," "Bloomy Bloomsbury"!
This time we apply the new face mold "Fairest" for the very first time!
1.jpg

"Bloomy Bloomsbury" is inspired by the Bloomsbury Group whom lived in London in 20th century that influenced literature and culture today.
The doll looks like she caught the stylistic breeze and lightness from the Bloomsbury.
3.jpg

The cocktail hat on her head is dark green color adds sophisticated flavor to the overall look.
The metal buckle at the center is a Jane Marple original design, it is inspired by the look of a Victorian frame.

The cape is light blueish green.
The one of a kind fabric is also a Jane Marple original design.
Beige and dark blue check print on the cape makes the cape look like it is a English tailor-made.
The gold embroidery and fur trim on the cape are very classic and smart.

The elegant collar matches the classical cape perfectly.
With it's abundance of tulle sewed together it makes a beautiful and interesting shadow on the cape.
2.jpg

Under the cape she is wearing a dress that looks like two pieces.
For the top of the dress, we used Jane Marple original red tartan fabric.
The skirt is made of a lot of tulle, and a lot of emblems are sewed on it.

The medals and crowns represent the United Kingdom.
The emblem on the side is a fine embroidery.
The envelope is made of organdie so it looks like an oil paper envelope.
Her elegant gloves use the matching fabric with the dress, and keep her cozy in the winter.

The shoes are a brand new mold!
They are designed based on Jane Marple's signature 4 strap shoes.
Look at the fine details! The gold buckles and stitches are delicately expressed on these tiny shoes.
Her argyle socks perfectly match the special shoes.

The stand and eye change ring look antique to match the classical and elegant doll.
Please enjoy this special girl with Petite Blythe "Bloomy Bloomsbury."

◆Information about the new face mold "Fairest"
The mold is named "Fairest" because of its innocent and pure look.
The mold being developed is inspired by the old "Excellent" mold, and it will have eyes with large pupils and a little bit chubby cheeks like "Excellent" mold.
The mold has a little bit of asymmetry, which is one of the charm points of Blythe.
The skin texture will be more "semi matte" than the "Radiance" skin.
